It has naturally magnetic properties and is attracted by a magnet and is the most magnetic of all minerals on Earth. Accumulation of mill scale caused by magnetite is very common in clean steam systems. This can be a dense layer on the surface of the steel and can be very susceptible to corrosion and cracking. Derouging and passivation removes magnetite and provides a passive layer which helps prevent premature corrosion.
